What’s So Special About Balm of Gilead?

Living on a homestead means spending a lot of time outside, and that also means being exposed to all kinds of plants, pollen, grasses, and biting insects.

When I set out to build the Sabbath Collection, I knew I needed one specific item in that lineup — something we could reach for when our skin felt itchy, irritated, uncomfortable, or simply in need of a little extra soothing care.

I wanted it to feel gentle and comforting on unhappy skin, while still being rich enough to nourish and protect. The texture is soft, creamy, and easy to spread — perfect for gently massaging over those areas that are asking for a little extra attention.

Balm of Gilead is one of those jars we keep close by and reach for first during the seasons when everything seems to be blooming, buzzing, or biting. 🌿🐝

So what makes it so special?

  • 🌼 Calendula-infused jojoba — Calendula has a long history of use in skin care, especially for dry or tender-feeling skin, while jojoba helps soften and condition without feeling heavy.

  • 🌾 Oat oil — Rich and cushioning, oat oil helps replenish dry skin and gives the balm that soft, comforting glide that makes it feel especially nice on rough or weather-exposed areas.

  • 💛 Bisabolol — A naturally occurring component found in chamomile, bisabolol was chosen for its ability to help take the “angry” feeling out of skin and bring a gentler feel to the formula.

  • 🫖 German chamomile — I chose German chamomile for skin that feels hot, reactive, or overstimulated. Its distinctive blue color comes from chamazulene, one of the compounds that makes this essential oil so special.

  • 🦋 Blue tansy — Blue tansy adds another layer for skin that feels especially bothered or uncomfortable, and it complements the chamomile beautifully in a formula designed for those moments when skin just needs extra attention.

These ingredients each bring something a little different to the jar, but together, they create the kind of balm I wanted Balm of Gilead to be — rich, gentle, restorative, and ready for those moments when skin is asking for a little extra care.

And now I would love to hear from you.

If you have used Balm of Gilead, would you share your experience in the comments? What made you reach for it, and how did your skin feel afterward?

Your feedback means so much to me, and it also helps others understand how real people are using these balms in everyday life. 🤍
