Why Beloved? Part Four — The Science Behind the Texture

Beloved’s smooth, whipped, cushioned texture doesn’t come from one “magic” ingredient—and it certainly doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from carefully balancing firm tallow and plant butters with silky botanical oils, lightweight Hemisqualane and concentrated plant actives. Each ingredient affects not only how Beloved nourishes the skin, but also how it melts, spreads, absorbs and feels during facial massage.

GRASS-FED KIDNEY-SUET TALLOW The foundation of Beloved is grass-fed kidney-suet tallow—but why kidney suet, and why grass-fed? Not all tallow is the same. Ordinary tallow may be rendered from softer fat collected from different areas of the animal.

Kidney suet is the firm, dense fat that surrounds and protects the kidneys. It’s naturally harder and more structurally consistent than softer trim fat, which makes it especially valuable when I’m trying to create a facial whip with a creamy body, slow melt and substantial cushion. I specifically choose grass-fed suet because an animal’s diet can influence the composition of its fat.

Grass-fed tallow is valued for its fatty acids and naturally occurring fat-soluble compounds, and it allows me to begin with a high-quality, minimally processed foundation from a source that better reflects the values behind Still Waters Homestead. I then triple-render it for purity, carefully removing moisture and impurities before it ever becomes part of the finished formula. MANGO AND KOKUM BUTTERS Mango and Kokum Butters give Beloved body and stability without requiring a heavy, waxy base.

Mango Butter contributes creaminess and a soft, luxurious melt, while firmer Kokum Butter helps the whip hold its structure and gives it a more refined, velvety finish. Together, they help create Beloved’s slow melt and rich cushion during facial massage. HEMISQUALANE Although its name sounds scientific, Hemisqualane is a remarkably lightweight, plant-derived emollient made from renewable sugarcane.

Its job is easy to understand: it gives the skin slip, silkiness and a softer, less oily finish. Beloved contains several rich, nutrient-dense ingredients, including tallow, plant butters and precious botanical oils. Hemisqualane is the counterbalance to all that richness.

It helps Beloved spread effortlessly, improves its glide and reduces the heavy or greasy sensation that richer ingredients can sometimes leave behind. It’s one of the reasons Beloved can feel deeply nourishing and luxuriously cushioned without feeling like you have a blanket of oil sitting on your skin. MEADOWFOAM SEED OIL Meadowfoam is an exceptionally stable botanical oil with a smooth, silky feel.

It helps Beloved glide across the skin during massage while also helping protect the freshness of the formula’s more delicate oils. I also use Meadowfoam to create Beloved’s Spilanthes infusion, allowing it to serve as both a luxurious facial oil and the carrier for one of Beloved’s defining botanicals. CALENDULA-INFUSED JOJOBA Calendula flowers are slowly infused into Jojoba to create a gentle, skin-conditioning oil.

Jojoba is technically a liquid wax, and its structure closely resembles the skin’s own natural sebum. It helps soften and condition the skin while contributing to Beloved’s smooth, balanced glide. MIXED TOCOPHEROLS Mixed Tocopherols are naturally derived forms of vitamin E.

They help condition the skin, but they also perform another very important job: helping protect Beloved’s precious botanical oils from premature oxidation. THEN THERE'S THE PROCESS The formula is carefully melted so the tallow, butters, oils and oil-soluble actives become one uniform mixture. It’s then flash-cooled to encourage the fats to crystallize evenly.

This is an important part of creating a smooth texture and helping prevent the graininess that can develop when natural fats and butters cool too slowly. Only then is Beloved whipped to create its rich, velvety texture—one that melts against the warmth of your skin while providing enough cushion and glide for a slow, intentional facial massage. And believe me, that balance took some work.

I tested different ratios, changed ingredients, adjusted the structure and paid close attention to how each version melted, spread and felt on the skin. Some trials were too soft. Some were too firm.

Some felt beautiful during application but remained much too oily afterward. I researched, tested and refined until every part of the formula worked together —not only to nourish the skin, but to create the smooth, creamy, cushioned experience I wanted Beloved to provide. That’s what turns a beautiful collection of ingredients into a formula that feels unmistakenly Beloved.
